Ceramics
From antiquity to the present day, Samos has stood out for the development of pottery — an art form that remains an integral part of the island’s cultural identity. In the workshops of Mavratzaioi, Koumaradeoi, Myloi, and Karlovasi, the creation of unique vessels continues, reflecting the island’s centuries-old tradition.
The most famous example of Samian pottery is the renowned “Pythagoras Cup.” Pythagoras designed his cup by applying fundamental principles of Physics to teach his students the concept of moderation. Inside the cup, a line indicated the limit to which it could be filled. If someone exceeded this limit, the entire contents would drain away through a hidden opening at the base, leaving the cup empty.
With this ingenious invention, Pythagoras not only created a clever artefact but also delivered a timeless lesson — reminding us that true wisdom lies in self-restraint and in the ability to enjoy what we already have, drawing the greatest benefit without excess.
